Favicon.ico and IE7 - no html code needed

following up on an old post from jimh009:
I am having the same experience he had with IE6, but I'm having it with IE7. I upload my favicon.ico file to the root directory of my website, and it appears in IE7 (and in favorites) with no HTML code pointing to it. But it doesn't appear in the latest Firefox for me, so I'll need to insert the html code anyway. Are others finding the same to be true?

Here's the old post:
Hi,
For the past several years, all I did was just upload a favicon.ico file to whatever folder I had and whenever that favicon.ico was called (such as through bookmarking) then the icon would appear in the favorites list.

In any event, the tip by Birdman does indeed work for IE 7. Suspect it works for all other browsers too. But...prior to IE 7, you didn't need to do this. And Firefox still picks up the favicon.ico automatically.

Welcome to the forums, j9lemmon.

I have no problems with favicons in the latest Firefox, so I don't think it's the browser itself. Here's a first guess - does your server have the proper MIME type associated with the .ico file extension?

Thanks for that suggestion, Tedster.
I believe the MIME settings are OK on my server, because I can get the favicon to display fine in Firefox 3.0.8 by putting the appropriate html code in the head. What I've found is that I only have to put that code in ONE page of my site. Once I've visited that page, the favicon appears on the other pages of the same site (those pages are in the same directory as the page with the html code pointing to the favicon).
