Microsoft plans to make its Internet Explorer 8 browser available on Thursday, along with a company-commissioned report claiming IE8 is more secure against malware than rival browsers from Mozilla and Google.
i'll put it on one of my trash notebooks to put that report to the test. it's hard having to chase firefox in the quest to be the most secure browser; mozilla has already secured that positioned in the browser user's mind; ms has a better chance of gaining market share by promoting themselves along another category, like chrome is focusing on speed.
Just went to IE8 site and watched a video on web slices. In the video the show and example of tracking an ebay auction. The web slice allows people to track ebay items as the price changes.
Is this a cookie stealing scheme or what?
If I send a visitor to ebay and they track an auction with web slices will MS replace my cookie?
[microsoft.com...]
This may be off topic but very concerning for affiliate marketers.
Don't think that's off topic at all. That's a very valid point. This feature is obviously made for a revenue stream for MS, so the good samaritan thing to do here is if the user originally appeared with your cookie, then to let the user use the functionality in the browser with the revenue share going to you.
My guess is the next step is to take that user from you, and get them to just use the "slice" in the future to originate the auction process, thus then cutting you out, and not stealing the user.
Ebay would be the one though to honor the original cookie and not the new one from the IE8 browser.
Or I could be totally wrong here in my assumption that MS is not trying to make affiliate money from Ebay at all and just trying to win over users.
I have one anoyance with it though. I visit the same sites a lot and basicaly select them from the drop down list in the address bar. In IE8 you can remove specific sites from the address bar drop down by clicking a small red cross tht apears next to the url when you mouse over it.
It just so happens the delete cross is positioned right where my mouse would be if I was wanting to view the site.
I need to re-educate myself to move the mouse a bit.
Mack.
Can you have IE7 and IE8 together on the same machine?
Install Microsoft Virtual PC and then download a disk image [microsoft.com] for the other browser(s).
Let's hope they soon force the update onto their customers so we can get rid of having to support the legacy IE6 and IE7.
I wouldn't get my hopes up too high. My employer just installed IE7 last week and our IT department seems to always stay one version behind on purpose.
Personally, I just installed IE8 about 30 minutes ago. So far it seems okay.
