I cannot view html code page

IE Explorer 6 do not show me the Html code

I do not know why, but in a computer in our office it is not possible to view the html source code using IE 6.

Clicking on View -> HTML or mouse right clicking -> HTML, it doesn't work.

I updated to the latest IE (Win) version: no way.

In preferences I selected block notes as HTML editor, but it doesn't work.

On the IE bar, the editing icon is greyed.

Do you have any useful tip?

I'm assuming that when you say "View - HTML" you mean "View - Source", is that correct?

Have you tried File - Edit to see if you can access the code that way? Or is that where you mean it's showing greyed?

How about "Save As"? Have you tried saving the page, then viewing the code? Maybe the person who coded the page managed to disable View - Source in the same way you can sometimes disable "Save Picture As"?

If you're really desperate to view the code, have you tried "File - Send Page by Email"?

Last suggestion would be to try another browser and see if you can view the code from there.

This is something I came accross recently. This is actually a bug in IE6 under Win2k and XP. It happens hen more than one window is open amd can be fixed by closing all windows and relaunch IE.

I tried to File-> edit, but the edit is greyed!

I can send the page by email: Eudora attaches the html pages.

It is not a big problem since we have several computers, but sometimes it is useful just to right click and see the source.

I think that I will re-install IE!

I do not love Microsoft: this kind of bugs are so frequent!

Funnily this problem reappeared for me today... and the solution of killing all windows and restarting isn't fixing it. I don't the MS have released a bug fix version for this yet.

I had this same problem recently, along with auto-complete not working either. Both problems cleared up when I cleared out all of my temporary internet files.

I think your Temporary Internet Files has maxed out. Go to IE Tools/Internet Options/Delete Files. This will get rid of all that old stuff, and give you some space to to your View Source.

I have this problem when viewing one particular site, using IE 5.5, the View --> Source option just does nothing at all.

Excellent tip: it works!

And to re-instate the possibility to file->edit with notepad you have to go to tools->options->programs and re-ceck your html editor.

The clearing of my cache worked a treat... thanks for the tip. I have 36,000 files in there - I should really clear it out more often, a good lesson learned!

Hello Everyone,

Your tips seem usefull. Except for the fact that you lose all your favorites (i.e the files for off-line viewing) as well. I tried clearing cookies and tempintfiles, using only 1 window and still wasn't able to view sources in IE (5.5/6). I use ME by the way. Any other suggestions perhaps? Would be very welcome.

God I wish I had seen this thread a few weeks ago. I had this same problem. I gave up on it, until one day I decided to clear out my temp files. When I did that, I got the page source back. Thank god, since that is really a big part of my job.

Apart, welcome to Webmasterworld. Clearing out your temorary files will not clear your favorites list.

Thank you, legster and GilbertZ, for the advice. I will save my favorite pages somewhere else before trying deleting my temp internet files again. You are right in saying my links are preserved, but viewing them off-line will become impossible :-(

Don't have the faintest id what ZAP is so guess that's not it :-)

Run into this problem occasionally... what you can do, instead of removing the temporary files is to write 'view-source' in the address field.

E.g.: view-source:http://www.webmasterworld.com

Go to internet option and minimize saving of temp internet files to 50 MB and you wont have the problem again.
