Translate website into Chinese

Bit of a dumb-ass question I'm afraid, but a client has asked me to provide a Chinese version of his website. When I try and cut and paste the translation into HTML it just shows as a series of lines.

There must be a simple way round this ?

it's probably a character encoding issue.

didn't find anything in that thread, and since it was in 2004 can't add to it.

I'm sure there's a simple answer - it's easy when you know how ! I can't even read the chinese in the Word doc sent to me and don't have the installation CD I'd presumably need.
