I have Windows XP, which comes with IE 6. Of course, there are still so many people using version 5.5 that I really think I should test my pages with it. When I tried to install it, I got an error that a newer version was installed (6) and setup couldn't continue. Does anyone know a workaround to get 5.5 to install?

Note to anyone who would suggest removing XP (I know a lot of people probably think that's best) - I have to have XP installed to provide remote assistance to my clients - at least until I know it well enough to be able to walk non-computer-literate people through things on the phone. Also, I don't really want to remove it, as I've really come to appreciate some of its features. Once I learned how to remove most of the bloat and foistware, I really started liking it.

Thanks for any input.

One workaround is to remove the DTD from your pages temporarily. That makes IE6 render them in "quirks mode", which is essentially the same as IE5.5

If you really want to install 5.5, you may have to partition your hard drive and install 5.5 on the new partition... you can't have multiple versions of IE on the same registry and AFAIK the latest versions of IE will not allow you to install older versions over them...

yes this is a total pain when it comes to Windows... you basically need a separate install of Windows for every version of MSIE you want to test, with the exception of MSIE4 and MSIE5, which can co-habitate together by using the special debug install option.

I run Connectix's VirtualPC with 2 extra virtual machines: a Windows98 machine running MSIE4.0 and MSIE5.0, and another Windows98 SE machine running MSIE5.5 :/
