I only do UK sites but the logs for 5 sites I have just looked at tell me:
NN4 2.8%
NN3 1.3%

These are averaged over 5 varied market sector sites for the last 2 months but none of the 5 are wildly different from the average figures

Yes Nick these are just NN figures. None of my sites have any facility for demographics.

This is just a guess - but many 40 to 60 year olds may be relatively late adopters, and not so interested in the technology. So, I'm guessing that their HOME computers would tend to be even more "out of the box" than the overall numbers. That is, whatever version of Explorer was installed by the seller.

However, that's home computers. More and more I'm becoming convinced that the bulk of NN4 visits come from company systems where the IT department is unwilling/unable to upgrade. That's in addition to the schools and libraries we already know about (which are pretty much in the same situation).

This means that browsing from work is the issue, and that will probably not differ across age demographics. We're also not likely to get a good demographic measure on browsing at work by age bracket!

I'd say that 2%-3% on NN4 is probably going to hold true for now.

Looking at 2 of the 5 sites mentioned in my earlier post they both average roughly the same 2.8% ish.

One is a wedding dress site and the other is an information site dealing with specifications and working practices.

Judge for yourself the age groups these 2 sets of visitors come from.

My site has 3,96% on NN4

The site is about Middle Low German manuscripts so it probably doesn't attract the teen crowd.

Picking up on Tedster's point - I have found that what tends to skew NN use most is if you are dealing with libraries, schools, community orgs, non-govt organisations etc. Recent website targeted at community level (libraries, community centres, schools etc) had up to 25% NN use - so a useful stat would be to find out 'how' 40-60 age group accesses the web.

I don't think they influence the statistics. One look at my pages and they never come back to haunt me.
