Surprisingly, I can't find residual 640 users. This is the first time.

On top of that, I almost always run with the favorites/bookmarks column open in the browser window, which brings me back to the neighborhood of those 640s.
All of which is only one example of why those stats numbers are not always real trustworthy.
The screen-width debate comes up very often, there is no single answer as it depends on your site's demographic and even personal preference. If you go above 800 pixels, make sure that your primary content block is readable with no side scroll, even if there is some scroll for a sidebar.
For modern fixed-width designs, 900 to 950 pixels is becoming the new norm.
So the question is - what screen resolutions are more popular on your site? You usual statistics package should tell you, or if you're running AdSense, then add the Google Analytics code as well to get a good idea of the profile of your users.
