I'm redoing my site and would like to design it a little wider. I'm wondering what percent of visitors would have to scroll horizontally if I went to 1000.

From one of my sites (wide topic):

1. 1024x768 32.951 48,33%
2. 1280x1024 9.466 13,88%
3. 1280x800 8.471 12,43%
4. 800x600 5.708 8,37%
5. 1440x900 2.987 4,38%
6. 1152x864 2.186 3,21%
7. 1680x1050 1.824 2,68%
8. 1280x768 1.219 1,79%
9. 1280x960 569 0,83%
10. 1400x1050 539 0,79%

Just 8,37%.
Surprisingly, I can't find residual 640 users. This is the first time.

I am so glad the 640s are finally gone.

800x600 5.708 8,37%

Is that the same as 8.37%? I guess that's enough to be concerned about as it would add up to a lot of visitors. <sigh>

I have a 1,600 wide monitor, but my browser window is seldom open at more than 800, that's why I got the big monitor, so I could have multiple windows open in full view.

On top of that, I almost always run with the favorites/bookmarks column open in the browser window, which brings me back to the neighborhood of those 640s.

All of which is only one example of why those stats numbers are not always real trustworthy.

10.92% for a pedominately US traffic site with broad reach and more than average numbers of institutional users (library, colleges, government, etc) which probably don't upgrade as often.

See the recent thread Browser Viewport Statistics [webmasterworld.com] about measurement of the available space.

The screen-width debate comes up very often, there is no single answer as it depends on your site's demographic and even personal preference. If you go above 800 pixels, make sure that your primary content block is readable with no side scroll, even if there is some scroll for a sidebar.

For modern fixed-width designs, 900 to 950 pixels is becoming the new norm.

So the question is - what screen resolutions are more popular on your site? You usual statistics package should tell you, or if you're running AdSense, then add the Google Analytics code as well to get a good idea of the profile of your users.

Anyone use 480x320?

No?

So nobody here got an iPhone?

I think as mobile internet becomes a bigger market we're going to have to consider these tiny screens!

Edit: Nor have I, nor do I want one.
