How do search engines handle special characters in code?

Using Dreamweaver, to tab a sentence, I'm using      

There are times when I look at the source code in the cache of search engines and I'm seeing "" .
Now if thats next to a word, I'm thinking it will change the results in the searchs. am i right on that?

Multiple spaces are going to be treated as a single space for indexing purposes.

I'm talking about how is showing instead of spaces.

SE should treat these as multiple spaces that will be compacted to one for indexing of data and snippet showing in preview - elements of HTML formatting play no part for snippet creation and will matter only for HTML cache data.
