I renamed a couple pages to have more descriptive URLs. In .htaccess I have used:
Redirect 301 /old_name.html [domain.com...]
1.) Will the new page inherit PR from the old page?
2.) Will sites that link to the old page name continue to add linkage to the new page?
3.) Should I expect to see entries in my error log each time a referral is redirected?
I have a plethora of badly named pages (created when I was a newbe and didn't know any better!) I am considering renaming them all.
4.) Should this be done all at once or would it be better to do a couple at a time, or does it really matter?
Thanks.
1) Yes. The new URL will replace the old one in SE indexes (indices?) and take its PR.
2) Depends on whether the webmaster checks his outgoing links. (If I understood your question)
3) No. A 301 redirect is not an error, M$ servers just insist on using text that describes 301 as an error. HTTP error codes start with "4", e.g. "404-Not Found".
4) Don't get me to lyin'! I suppose there's a risk of confusing the Google PR calculator with too many redirects to follow, but I sort of doubt it. However, if potential lo$$e$ are high, do it slowly.
Requisite disclaimer: The above is what I have experienced. That was 6 months ago. Things could have changed. Don't blame me if it doesn't work this way anymore! IOW, this information could be worth a lot less than what you paid me for it! ;)
