Google map links open a new tab in IE

I have a link to a placemark in google maps on my site. in Mozilla it works fine but in IE it opens the kml file in a new tab instead of opening it in google maps. How can I change this?

Hi,

This is something done on the client side and file type associations. IE doesn't know to open kml files in Google Maps.
