_._.html - why this extension?

Need some feedback on this.

Greetings all...

I am looking over a new project and notice the old developer used the extension:
<snip> _._.html </snip>
Example: /filename/_._.html

To me this extension serves no purpose. I have been around a long time in site development and never ran into this - either I am lucky or missing the boat on some function this serves.

The project I looking at is partly optimization and partly site development - so you know the realm in which I am speaking.

Would not using this _._.html cause some issues with search engines.
