I need to instruct my programmers on how to generate through a script bookmarks to folks like del.icio.us ; digg ; technorati ; etc etc with an e.g. "Add to del.icio.us" link on each page of the website.

We have around 80k of unique pages.

Can anyone help point us in the right direction on how to do this?

There are already readymade scripts and coding instructions available for doing this , just see the respective websites

all others have smilar links in the website just check those out

if you're using popular blogging software there are plugins or other ready made scripts available for each of those platforms. If you're on a different CMS or standard pages web pages you can try this social bookmarking script [webmasterworld.com].

Don't know much about Drupal modules, if that doesn't work try searching for [social bookmarking scripts] or [social bookmarking widgets]

My SEO and marketing consultant mentioned that he is not convinced that adding these bookmarks is a good thing to do. Besides saying that the script doesn't work very well, he think's adding these icons to our site will just add clutter rather than offering users any real benefit or providing any search benefit.

Is this a correct statement or are we off track?

I am interested in strenthening repeat sales to our e-commerce site and thought this might assist.

Try AddThis Social Bookmarking at AddThis.com [addthis.com] . I use it and am happy with it. Its a small button with a pop up window which links to all social bookmarking sites.
