Change home file name or let it be?

It wasn't labeled as either index or default

I'm redesigning a 10 year old site that had the home page labeled without using index or default. They didn't even use a keyword. I'm aware of the problems with changing file names and that it can take months or a year to recuperate from such a change but this site has all content in frames and just a handful of links and several other problems affecting rank so this is a good time to change the name if it will help.

What would you recommend?

I'd create an index file and then redirect the old home page file to the site's domain.
