Where can I find a list of of font faces that are work on most browsers and operating systems, or a list of fonts that look similar so I know what I should specify as my "backup" fonts?

Google "universal system fonts" but off the top of my head they are:

Arial
Tahoma
Helvetica
Verdana
Times
Georgia
Courier

I probably forgot one but these are all I use. Actually I never use Helvetica.

Hi,

Generic families [w3.org] are probably the best for cross platform compatibility. Most systems by default will define relatively generic fonts that meet the family characteristics. The W3C page also lists example fonts for each family.
