Good or Bad?

The HTML Working Group [w3.org], the ones who are reinventing HTML [webmasterworld.com] are proposing Microsoft's Chris Wilson as the intial chair.

Daniel Glazman, who was involved in the standardization of HTML4 and CSS2 and is still an Invited Expert in W3C's CSS Working Group, while saying he trusts Chris still expresses some concerns about this.

I certainly fear the "Microsoft puts its hand on HTML" press articles we're going to face.

Chris does respond to this and other concerns on his Albatross blog, saying..

I don’t think chairship gives any particular power in a W3C Working Group; I believe it carries the responsibility to get things done, and to be objective about the needs and requirements of the other WG members and the public we serve.

Chris goes onto say that if there were anyone who could be totally independent from all desktop browser vendors, could be driven about the goals of evolving HTML and who understands the requirements of all sized entities - he'd much rather they took the job ;)

Anyway I like Chris he's done a lot for the the IE/CSS support debate and the PR job it entailed, but what do you think should there be a "Microsoft" chair to such a visible New Working Group and could it adversely affect the WG or would it be a good thing?

A good thing.

Microsoft, for better or worse, understand ergonomics and have a history of producing solutions for ordinary people. Perhaps a Microsoft chair will steer HTMl functionality towards something of more benefit to the ordinary people.
