The norm way back used to be to build for the lowest common denominator and the most popular screen resolution , 800x600. However, I don't think that is the most popular resolution today? Anyone know? Our font on a 1250x1028 is miniscule but I don't know what the optimal size should be? And what about graphic size - again, I'm old school and build my templates 800x600

Advice?

Our font on a 1250x1028 is miniscule...

I think pretty well all 'default' fonts are going to be small at that kind of resolution, particularly on a 17" screen! But I think those people who like to run at that kind of resolution (or bigger) are used to it, and expect it... and will run windows side by side to be able to fit more on their screen. It is important to realise that those who run at high resolutions, don't necessarily run their browser window maximised - in fact I'd go so far as to say I'd very much doubt that they do.

Well I think 1024 x 768 is alot more common these days, but you still can't forget the lower (and different aspect ratio) resolutions. So even if you optimise your templates for say 1024 x 768, it still needs to degrade nicely for lower resolutions, as you could end up losing some of your users.

Personally, I like to be able to see the pixels... and generally run at 1024 x 768 on a 19" screen. On which a 12px (or equivalent) is about OK for me. Personal preference really.
