Index page displays in Firefox & Navigator but not IE 6

I know the solution will be something simple. (!)

A short intro: We are a large real estate team in a Houston suburb that commissioned a developer to create our site about 6 years ago. All was well, but we need to periodically update our site content (team members, contact info, etc.) All was well until late 2005 when he got too busy to comply. After many requests and waiting for nearly a year, we decided to bring the project back in-house, but only as a last resort.
I have updated the site, etc. and even learned a bit about Javascript, which the original guy used in headers and footers.
BUT, as I was about to upload to our hosting account, I noticed that the index page would not diplay in IE 6 (only HTML) but runs just fine in Firefox and Navigator.
I've 'twiddled' with everything I can think of in the code (that I dare!) and security settings on IE (if security turns out to be the problem, you can't expect the masses to set security just to see YOUR site so it's probably not that). I've run a tag check in WebWriter 3, etc.
I spent nearly 20 years in the computer 'bidness', mostly with IBM and then Apple and have done some HTML work in the dim past, but am certainly not a website developer.
I'm hoping someone can tell at a glance where I've gone wrong. I am using (please don't laugh!) FrontPage 2000, because I already own it.
Many thanks, guys!

hi ddunk welcome to WebmasterWorld

frontpage is good software and still used by lot of starters...so nothing to feel humilated

as far as your IE6 problem can you elaborate what sort of error your are getting in that?

is is due to javascripts? does it says that you have to run this activex and security bla bla...when you open it in IE6?

if thats the case this is due to javascript only , just upload your website and then see if you still get same error , its due to zones security setting , IE6 warns if we locally try to see the javascript pages for this , and if you upload it and then see that.

just tell us again what you get

thanks have great time at WebmasterWorld :)

Many thanks for your interest and reply!
I was reluctant to upload as our site is still running under the developer's host even tho' it has dated material and information.
Maybe I'm over-thinking this but thought that the failure to preview was an indication that I would have a useless site once I redirected the site away from the developer's server. And then I WOULD have to solve this problem! :-)
Yes/No?
Many thanks!

i would suggest you to actually see what the website looks onto to internet then report back

you may try uploading it onto some other space or folder if you dont want to disturb your present running website

Oops, sorry! I didn't answer the first question.
No, I'm not getting any Active X or security alerts, I'm going by the Preview In Browser feature of FrontPage 2000, rightly or wrongly (is that a word?) :-)
Using that feature, the index page displays beautifully in the latest FFX and NN, including the new, rotating team images I embedded in the existing Javascript header. When previewing in IE6, I just get a screen of HTML.
To me, that was a red flag and I was afraid I'd hose our existing, operating site if I switched off our old one.
I suppose I could rewrite the index page from scratch, elimating the Javascript and just use tables for the header and footer elements but I was convinced that my problem is a style or tag error or some such so I was exploring that before 'reinventing the wheel'.
Always deeper in your debt!
Seriously, thanks!

Ok, I did publish and I AM getting an Active X alert ('click the bar to allow blocked content') I did get that before, now that I think about it. It's why I was twiddling the security settings in IE. Also, I noticed that the index page I'd LIKE to display (index.shtml) has a generic document icon in FP2000 and, as such, when published, index.htm displays, which is the old site's index page.
Does this make any sense or is this giving you a headache too? :-)

Update, for those who are playing at home! :-)
I finally switched on Allow Active Content (duh) in IE6 (now IE7; the released version runs a bit better than the 2 betas I was putzing with earlier, but I digress...) and all is well. I have uploaded the new files and am in the process of doing the final twiddles on the site.
Many thanks for your help and interst! Wish us luck! :-)
