Why Switch to XHTML?

Currently I use HTML 4.01 Transitional on my site. I was thinking about making the switch to XHTML but this would be a huge effort.

Is it possible that HTML 4.01 Transitional will soon be deprecated and browsers might start having problems with it, or is it safe for the future?

HTML 4.01 transitional is certainly safe for the immediate future. The main reason I see for going to XHTML is if you have a reason to need xml functionality. Otherwise, the main transition I suggest is going to HTML 4.01 strict, at least for all new development.
