Are they waiting for version 8 to give us an option -- .ico? Anyhow, I'm working on a PC and would like to know if saving my 16x16 image as a .ico will do the trick or do I need a special software.

BTW - when do I move up to the big leagues and become a senior member !!

Just changing the extension won't do the trick, you need special software to save in .ico format.

An ico file is actually a kind of folder or directory that can hold more than one image (different resolutions, color depths, etc.) You can see this in the way your windows icons change size according to the display options you choose, whether you drag them onto the desktop, etc.

So creating that file format (one that can hold more than one image and display the correct one according to the situation) is more than changing the extension - even though we web guys usually create our favicons to contain only one image

I agree, it would be nice to be able to do this in Photoshop.

I use Photoshop to create the image & Hijaak to convert to .ico format. Silly that Adobe hasn't built it in but Hijaak is cheap.

Well, you can create an image in BMP format, and just rename it to .ico

Hmmm... when I first tried that Doc, the favicon never showed up in the Favorites listing. Did you get it to work?

Slightly OT, and I hate to mention it because someone may actually do it, but is there a chance that one day there will be animated icons? I know, I know, almost as bad as blinking text, but surely it's only a matter of time!

Imagine an entire Favorites list full of animated icons, each one doing their own thing. Total bedlam- much worse than a blink, IMO.

Makes me want to move into a cave up in the high country.

And what is the added value to animated icons?

But I surely miss the ico-option in PhotoShop as well.

A little OT, but related: have you ever noticed that if you search for "favicon.ico" in a SE, up comes a huge list containing a lot of site stats pages. Among them pages that are not meant to be viewed by others than the site owners. Amazing, how some (read: a lot of) companies are completely unaware of this privacy "bug" caused by favicons.

Well, tedster, if you don't get it to work, save it in ol' Paint ;)
I've got it to work ..

But, I agree, it would be better to just have the .ico option in PS

You can get a bmp to ico converter here: (no affiliation) [qtam-computer.com...]

I used the 2.5 version and it seemed to work fairly well.
