Hi! I'm trying to do some screen captures to display my web portfolio, and it looks like crap!!

I'm on a PC and I'm just hitting the Print Screen Button, going into Photoshop and resizing and saving the screen prints as gif.

I have seen some 3rd party software that does screen prints. Can anybody recommend one that gives good quality images when you resize?

Thx!

For Windows 98 users, M$ has a program called HTML Help that is used for creating Windows help files. The program comes with an extremely powerful screen capture utility that will allow you to capture a single component or the entire screen, using yuor mouse, keyboard or a timer. Do a search for HTML Help Workshop 1.31. Windows 2000 and XP come with their own version of HTML Help and should NOT install this version.

I remember using an application called ScreenThief that did just what you want. Can't remember whether it was one word or two but I favour one.

I use Screenhunter from Wisdom-soft. It's freeware and can capture a full screen, an active window, the client window or a rectangular area.

Doesn's seem to hog any system resources and it's easy to use.

Why not optimize it as a jpeg?
Better quality for somthing detailed like a screen capture...

Hiya newnewbie,
unless the screen you want to capture is pretty basic as far as colours go gif just won't do. Nick_w's advice to use jpg is good in those cases.
I find when reducing images that it is better to reduce a little (50%) at a time rather than go the whole hog in one.

Another help when resizing -- before (not after) each smallish reduction step (I concur with tbear on that) run the Sharpen Edges filter.

If you're going to resize several times, a little boost to the color saturation in Hue > Saturation may also be useful, depending on the particulars of the image.

If your final image is relatively small, gif actually may be the best final format for saving - but don't resize an image while it's in indexed color - you get the jaggies. Always resize in RB color space.

I use HyperSnap by Hyperionics. Costs 35 US$. I'm very happy with it.

Where I work we use CaptureEze Pro to take screen shots of our webpage to put in printed material. It has different settings so you can take the screenshots at higher resolutions....I'm not a big fan of the program but it seems to work ok.
