I can't disable "search from the Address bar" in IE 5.5, which makes it impossible to use the "view-source:url" command.

I've gone to the Advanced Settings... clearly checked "Do not search from the Address bar," and have even rebooted and checked that the preference is holding. But when I try using "view-source:url" from either the address bar or the Open window, my preference is disregarded, and "Search for" precedes the command.

The View pulldown menu works fine for viewing the source, but I use the "view-source" command for a very different purpose... It's a very handy way to intercept meta refresh redirect pages, and I feel handicapped without it. Any suggestions?

Robert, you may be accustomed to IE, but this is one of a host of reasons I love Opera. In Opera, under Preferences > Privacy, there is a simple checkbox to disable automatic redirection. Trap any code you want (and open it in any editor you want).

Opera is a browser that lets me operate the way I want to - without "training wheels", without deeply buried mysteries, and without the need for weekly security patches that need patches themselves the following week.

Now if only Google could make a toolbar for Opera!

As to your direct question, I don't know of a way to change this behavior in IE.

I haven't yet used Opera, but I've been strongly considering it.

I've been looking for a secure and functional email system, and Outlook is more functional than the competition, but much less secure... partially because it's tied to IE. What I've been thinking of doing is to disable all the scripting, Active-X, Java, and file downloads functions on IE, and to use that setup with Outlook... and then to use Opera for the Web. As I understand it, with Opera I can switch javascript on and off easily, for a particular site.

I assume that Opera is, in general, much more secure than IE. I also understand that it's faster. IE5.5 is really slow.

Is it true that Opera will work with my IE Favorites? My Favorites are almost as important to me as my address book, so that would be a key factor in my decision.

And what about plug-ins? Will the same plug-ins work with both browsers?

Yep, Opera will work with your IE Favorites. And javascript is just F12 and one click to toggle on and off. Graphics on and off is just the "g" key.

Give it a shot. The email client is still pretty bare-bones, but the browser has raised the bar for everyone. And fast? I can barely stand the sludgy response from other browsers now that I'm used to Opera.

It also has a small footprint and is thoughtful of system resources. It's a boon all araound for anyone who spends much time online. As I wrote in a thread a few months back - it gives me an extra hour or two in my day through it's intelligent efficiency.
