I recently installed IE 5.5 and it doesn't accept jpg image files. How is that?

I've had a problem trying to get people to view images in ie 5.5 before.

When ever they opened them they would only get the lil' red x indicating that the img source was incorrect. I checked the properties and it was pointing to the correct file, so that wasn't it. It turns out that ie 5.5 wouldn't display a jpg over 1mb in size.

How large is your image?

I once had that problem with IE.

use the MS policy.
Remove and reinstall (if its a mac or old win.)

I've had a similar problem. It would'nt display the img and the file path was correct. What ended up happening was that when I created the image, the format was CMYK not RGB. So I switched to RGB and it showed it on IE 5.5.

I noticed this problem the other day when I changed a pictures format from tif to jpg, execept this time the image was only 200kb.

Circuit Jump, Would the image have been CMYK because it was originally .tif?

I ended up opening and exporting in fireworks as a jpg and they worked fine.

ie 5.5 sp2 win2k (my system) displays large file sized JPGs - just tried a 1.6meg jpg (6000px by 4000px 300dpi) - it works fine.

the CMYK JPG is a problem - broken image effect, so Justa, your TIF may well have been CYMK, especially if it came from a print-related area.

Chances are this is from your browser cache being overly huge. Another symptom is that you can not view the source of a page as well as a few other fairly bizzare symptoms. Most of the time it is a easy as clearing your cache.
