how can i create a layer in one frame - say left.htm - and show it in another - say right.htm - but only defining layers in a file in left.htm (so right frame contents can be any file with no layers)

is it possible to show layers in the right frame that are defined in the left frame irrespective of what file is in the right.??

Yes, with some simple copying of the layer with DHTML that is possible. The only problem you should be aware of that the domain of the 'right frame' should be equal to the domain of the top frame.
