Advice on image placement in folders

I've got several pages and they're all linked together. On each page I have images of buttons and the images are linked to all the other pages. Click on a button and go to a different page. The question is where to put the images of the buttons.

For example, on each page (except the home page) I have a button that says "Home". And when it's clicked on, it takes the viewer back to the home page. And this means the same button (image) is on several pages.

And the question is, is it best to put the image of the "Home" button in one folder and then refer all the pages to the one folder, or to put a copy of the button in the each of the page folders. By page folder I mean the folder that is associated with an individual page?

Or is it just a matter of personal choice?

One image for the whole site would be best. That way the image has only to be downloaded once by the visitor (caching).
