What is the best thing for keeping your sitemap up to date?

Do you use software for your html sitemap?

I am going to remove my XML google sitemap as i believe it could be causing me problems.?
I am not sure in which way to do my html sitemap manually or with software.
If so whats best.
Also do you add the page descriptions along with the links on your sitemap whats most effective.

How much does the software cost? How much time does it take you to do it manually? Could you spend that time on other, more lucrative work?

Check out phpsitemapNG. It's free and does a good job, also you can automate the crawling of your site for the sitemap if you can use chron jobs.
