My friends and I are starting a web magazine. We only have a $2,000-$6,000 budget for a CMS and web design, so we want to be really careful about how to proceed.

Ideally, we want our site to look very clean and professional, similar to the New York Times [nytimes.com], the LJ World [ljworld.com], the Telegraf [telegraf.by], American News [aberdeennews.com], and The Times [timesonline.co.uk].

The "look and feel" we're going for is classic, simple, and trustworthy. I've searched all over the Internet for web design firms that specialize in newspaper/magazine designs, but couldn't find anyone's portfolio that really wowed me. I've also tried emailing the newspapers regarding who did their designs. Unsurprisingly they were not too excited about sharing that information.

Are there design firms that specialize in doing newspaper/magazine designs? Is there a listing of professional newspaper website designers? Or should I just find the best designer I can afford and tell him/her the look I'm going for?

To be clear, I don't want all the functionalities that come with a professional newspaper CMS (like that offered by Prospero [prospero.com]). I just need the look of a design, which will probably be implemented over a Drupal (or similar) CMS.

On a limited budget, I'd say View Source will be your friend. In general, I don't see anything challenging in the layout of the newspaper sites. Maybe in the back end: version control, special scripting, feed integration and so on -- but not in the basic look.

Which firm is View Source and how much do they charge by the hour?

He he, just kidding. =)
