Was it Joe Maddalone by any chance? I can't seem to confirm who figured this out.

I don't think it was him, but he seems to be taking credit for it. I found a post of his on the css-discuss mailing list at Incutio Archivist dated November 3, 2003 in which he says over the weekend he wrote an article about something he stumbled upon.

Jobarr posted this on October 7, 2003: [webmasterworld.com...]

It originated here, or at least, at the time that post was started, Google wouldn't return any relevant results for multiple versions of IE. If someone else figured it out first, it wasn't publicized much.

But shortly after this thread [webmasterworld.com] came out, the technique began to become known. I've seen several people taking credit, but I think it happened here first. And if it did, I was probably one of the first twenty or so people in the whole world to run IE 5 through 6 on the same PC! ;) Not that I'm taking any credit for the idea myself, I just happened to be here when the topic came up.

Joe Maddalone's email on that mailing list I previously mentioned actually pre-dates DrDoc's post here by 3 days.
