I have Ie installed, going to the Help button and asking for the version number leaves the version box blank.

The other info that appears there is also blank.

Right.

The problem is that it wont allow me access to some websites, some sites it will and then wont allow java based drop down menus.

On other sites menus wont appear at all.

Two of the biggest sites that I have problems with have been unable to resolve this problem and are now scratching their heads.

Is it a virus?

Id like to uninstall IE but again I dont seem to be able to, the update from Microsft report that I have the latest version installed.

Any ideas?

i think you should check your security.Maby your security block websites or it will be set on very high.

i think you most download Java, if you don't have it. Ie can't open it.

Tim

What incre says about downloading a java machine may be true -- if you really mean to say "java" and not "javascript" -- they are two very different technologies. Because you are talking about dropdown menus, that makes me suspect that you are talking about javascript.

The fact that no version information appears in your Help menu points to some kind of trouble. I've been bailed out a couple times by some of the information on Microsoft's page "How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP."

Whats your OS..
if Xp what level SP?
can you see what the precise version oF IE is if you go to your config panel and try from there ..
if so look in your browser local , trusted etc security settings ..
whats it say ..

why not just install firefox or opera and stop using IE ..if you want to check what you build with it for compatibility is one thing ..letting it talk to the web is another ..

BTW 'less you traded the robin for exploder 7 ( which can be considered as a "beta" as in "beta not install it 'til one million other poor sods have found the main bugs" you are probably running a flavour of IE 6 ..
So forget the help button ..can you get at the tools button next to it and go down to and open the options ..lots of tabs in there ..looks like glastonbury backstage ..;)?

sounds like it's gone into paranoid mode ..wont let you surf anything with skin showing ..will however let any passing javascript kick it into activex mode tho ....
so if you can get to tools options maybe we can see what it thinks it's doin ..

if you can get at the control panel ..from start on the 'doze bar ..click the add /remove programmes button ..then scroll down the list of what you have til you arrive at "microsoft etc" ..there it will tell you exactly which internet explorer you do have ..much as tho I would like to say ..click "remove" ( get thee hence satan ) ..dont ..too many other things are wrapped up with IE in doze ..just close the box ..back away and then install opera or Firefox and forget IE ..

and if your bank says you need IE ..change your bank to one that knows about online security

Tried all of that all security settings a down to low or minimum, you cant uninstall IE from the add remove feature if its above 5.5.

wheres that wall....

IE is so tied-in with the rest of Windows that it may well be time to do a full data backup and wipe/reinstall the operating system. Whether it is a virus or damaged system files, it comes down to the same thing - IE is Windows, so to fix the former you have to fix the latter.

You can get rid of all the doze versions of Ie right upto the last one via another proggy tho ( or you can take the plunge and go for a walk in the bowels of the registry..MWUUUUHAHHHAHHHH )I'll try and find where the link is ( to the proggy ..freeware I think in it's lightest version) after I fIxed dinner ...

I eat slow and savour ( to nite chilli con carné ..and kashmiri recipe for fried potatoes and courgettes in butter and yaourt with fresh coriandre ) made by self ..and living in the land of "rouge"..i have distractions in a bottle or 2 to prolonge the affair.

plus the proggy in question is on another machine which is elsewise occupied at the moment for anaother 2 hours or so ..rendering some extra slow humongeuos 3D graphix..however dinna greet bonny lad ..

BTW ..why are you still using IE ( any flavour ) to try to wreck your OS via the net?

One last thing - are you using an ad-blocker or anti-virus solution which could have disabled Javascript?

I think Symantec puts an icon in the system tray -- you can right click on it for a quick disable.

1.) IE is built INTO windows. If you are using Windows think of Windows as your table and IE as a chair; then think of them made out of a single mold. If you have Windows there is no way to uninstall Internet Explorer or as I refer to Internet Exploiter.

2.) Lack of UA declaration/missing version numbers leads me to believe you probally have spyware (or a virus) but most likely spyware; use adaware to clean it out though using multiple scanners is suggested.

3.) Java is NOT effective clientside and is a HUGE SECURITY RISK! It is the ONLY way I've ever experienced security issues with Firefox (backdoor viruses ALL in the Java folders). Disable JAva and ignore sites that use it for anything clientside.

4.) Robin is right, use Firefox (or Opera).

5.) Symantec is as effective an antivirus as <snip>. You're actually better off without symantec (and most people wouldn't finish the sentence there heh). Symantec runs about 4-6 procceses to ahh, do one thing. It is the Netscape of anti-virus programs.

Could well be a virus - auto protect is constantly switched off.
