I recently was looking at site I designed in the Browser Cam and the site looked awful in some and fine in others. I went back and reworked it but it still looked bad in some. I really hate the idea that a web site I designed may show up on someone's computer in one of those browsers that it looked like
bad. So is it possible to design a site that looks good in all browsers and if not, which browsers do you design for? And what screen resolution?

Thank you.

Yep, although it gets harder the more broswers you include in your testing (but that's half the fun :) ). Persoanny I make sure that my site looks as good as possible in recent Firefox/Safari/Opera, and minus a few small points the same in IE6. IE5.x (Win and Mac) usually get slightly cut down versions through graceful degredation but the site is basically still complete. Earlier browsres get the CSS hidden so they can access the content fine, so hopefully my sites work for everyone.

Regarding screen size, 800x600 is the gold standard really. Any more and you either run into people with low screen resoltions or people like me who purposefully don't maximise their browser.

Robin's got it. To get things right across various browsers, I would recommend reading up on the difference between Standards Mode and Quirks Mode [webmasterworld.com] - and pay attention to the troubles around the various Box Models [webmasterworld.com].

Thank you both for your replies to my post. The links you provided are most helpful and I appreciate your directing me to them.
