Background for <tr> tags and not <td> tages

Why is one acceptable?

Why is a attribute "background" valid HTML 4.01 Transitional acceptable for a <tr> tag and not for a <td> tag? Or am I incorrect?

Hi bartainer,

I don't think that background was ever a valid attribute for either TD or TR. There is an attribute bgcolor [w3.org], but that was deprecated in HTML4.01
