As many of the posts on the subject that I have found are kind of old, has anyone done any recent research into what text to html ratio ranges are acceptable for any of the major SEs lately?

As hard as I try to create good, solid pages, I was shocked for the most part when I did scans of some of my pages, and found that my best ratio was about 20% viewable text :-(

If the source code is well-formed, any ratio at all is "acceptable". However, your page will do better in many ways if you get that ratio cranked up as high as you can. Just make it your discipline to be lean and mean, and push css and javascript to external files as much as possible.
