Google has announced Gemini 2.0 to developers. It's also available in its assistant, Gemini App.

We’re getting 2.0 into the hands of developers and trusted testers today. And we’re working quickly to get it into our products, leading with Gemini and Search. Starting today our Gemini 2.0 Flash experimental model will be available to all Gemini users. We're also launching a new feature called Deep Research, which uses advanced reasoning and long context capabilities to act as a research assistant, exploring complex topics and compiling reports on your behalf. It's available in Gemini Advanced today.

Our team decided to stick with AWS for our AI infrastructure because it gives us more freedom to build and customize solutions without being locked into one ecosystem, like Google's. While Gemini 2.0 looks amazing—especially for businesses fully using Google tools—we need flexibility to integrate with different services. AWS also lets us focus on creating unique AI features tailored to our needs.

As I understand it, Gemini 2.0 doesn't directly compete with AWS's infrastructure but rather with application-layer AI like OpenAI's models. If the focus is on infrastructure and customization, AWS aligns better with our goals, especially considering the need for integrations and AI-driven product personalization

In short, Gemini is great if you're all-in on Google, but AWS is better for those of us who want to keep options open and build something truly our own. And they have a significant user base.

I'm also distrustful of Google as a dedicated partner given their track record with their monopolistic, anti competitive behaviours. That's just the nature of relationships i suppose, particularly as they are so darned ubiquitous . Once burned, I'm not in a hurry to return with all our eggs in one basket.

The problem with the Google ecosystem is they love to drop projects. They give users perhaps a few months notice (don't know time period) and then say goodbye. I say goodbye to my old trust of Google.

Been burned too many times by g "projects" that never last, or worse, become deprecated or diminished before shutting down. Too many other bright shiny objects out there to consider.
