I think I like reading the anxst, paranoia, hopes and dreams leading up to the update rather than the real update thread itself. It's always the same "I did great!"..."I did awful!" * 100

I tend to agree. I think the mods made a mistake closing that pre-update thread. A whole lot more interesting than the update thread, because as you say it is just people posting of joy, grief, or the fact things stayed about the same for them. It really isn't until the update is finished that any interesting threads about it start coming. Such as analysis about if possible tweaks that have been made in the algo in the latest update, emphasizing certain things more, and other things less, etc.

I have a "war board" in my office (big white board where I write all my projects, ideas and leads). On the top is "The Dance is coming" and we all use to start to read the forum and take a break for the hohum of everyday. It use to be a lot of fun. Very exciting time. Why is it gone?

The latter wouldn't work long. We'd quickly spot it was the same. However, this board *would* explode if just the backlinks for link:www.yahoo.com changed. "What do you mean the dance hasn't started? Check the backlinks, fool." ;)

How about the return of Googlebot? Doesen't the bot return soon after the update starts. I just noticed that Googlebot returned to my site today and wonder if that means an update is lurking?

There seems to be no real trend to how google crawls and the update. Crawling is not a good test for updates.

We usually see the update start before Googlebot shows up again. However, this month is different. We are getting deep crawled by Googlebot right now and have been for the past two days. This reminds me of the delayed update earlier in the year when the update was about two weeks late. May be history repeating itself.

Okay, this might be a silly question, but why doesn't GoogleGuy just tell everyone when it's going to happen? Is there some disadvantage to webmasters knowing in advance? Well, other than lower profits for the alcohol industry.

Definitely not. And, there is no apparent sense to how Googlebot crawls sometimes. My other site, which of is of 2 pages at the moment, had both pages crawled by Googlebot *four* times in the last 24 hours! It is things like that that tend to make me paranoid Googlebot somehow just doesn't trust me. However, since neither page has changed in over a month, I've just gotta figure Googlebot was a little bit drunk today. ;)

The update isn't late. Check the update chart on this site. The update has happened on the 24th and 25th day of the month a number of times this year. The update is merely due, not overdue.

Loved the post! It (and also because my web server is down!) actually made me look for my webmasterworld login information and reply after some months!

Now that I moved pretty close to the plex [of course, just for the love of Google! ;)], the update is taking place later than usual!

So how much of a difference are we looking for on the three servers?
Ie Right now, www1 is showing 40000 more links for MSN, 70000 more for Yahoo and 24000 for MSN than www2 and www3 do.

Yes, there is. We know that the amount of links for Yahoo and Google will change in each update, as with your website you said that people should be linking to you.

My site will definitely be gaining links as it didn't even exist at the time of the last update. It's in DMOZ and it's been linked to by other listed sites, so I'm pretty confident of seeing activity.
