Does anyone know when was the last time there was an update of backlinks, and of PR - NOT necessarily together, just when each of those were last updated by Google? Following on that, how soon after that did the SERPS move? Any (rough) patterns developing? Thanks.

Can you confirm if those 801 backlink are to your site or to the redirecting page? In my case it is to the redirecting page. I will wait for a day and try my luck with an email to google and ask the webmaster of that site to remove the redirect. It seems, its rather easy to knock your competitor off this way. I have just started a thread. Let me see if that gets posted.

Does that mean that the change in backlinks and page rank is currently being reflected in the SERPS
Yes I do think that.
The SERPS are updated fairly regularly as anchor text etc fluctuates.
The backlinks I believe are taken into account, with the official backlink count and PR being updated and "displayed" about once a month or so (it does vary).

Is everything still bouncing around?
It is for me. Actually, I only saw the new page rank on my site for a brief moment last night (my newer pages have been PR 0 for a while and they finally showed as PR 5 and 6). This morning, the interior pages again show as PR 0. I would assume that the data centers are still dancing and it might take a day or so to settle down.
Thanks guys, but I'm still in the dark. It's as though the whole thing never happened. (sigh)
On another note, I always thought that inbound links were supposed to help, but could never hurt, your ranks. We had been purchasing high PR links through a company (won't mention who!) and they were the type that puts the same anchor text on every page of the site, sometimes more than 2000 pages in one domain. I now trully think that Google is filtering these types of links, and maybe even penalizing sites that are linked to, not just from. It is strange because we have at least 300 good, on topic links from individual sites as well as the "bought" links. Any ideas?
a couple of big sites that have gone from 7 to 6 within the last year have now gone to 5, despite be relatively steady in importance and backlinks. some i monitor others have gained backlinks that would easiliy have made them PR6 a year ago still stay at 5.
This is false, because this mean i can hurt a site by adding links in all my 5,000 pages in a PR7 website.
I was happy initially as my site went from PR4 to 5, but now it's back at 4.
And I believe I am still sandboxed (site opened in March). When I search "all in title" for my main keywords, I'm 5th on the page, but when I do a regular search, I'm nowhere to be found.

You've been nuked. See my message #61.
Seen an awful lot of these PR0's this morning.
Well gee...if that's the case, let me go buy a few links to my competitor's sites so I can get them penalized....
If google (or any other search engine for that matter) actually started penalizing a site for site that link TO it, then there would be a free for all "mercenary" movement in getting your competitors penlaized and/or banned.
No...the only possible (and responsible) way for google to deal with it would be to either manually disallow the passing of PR from a site to external sites, or develop an alog that can detect completely unrelated sites.
Having said that....an algo would be very difficult, inmy opinion. For exampleL We sell products that appeal to the "college age" crowd, and buy several text ads on college-based sites (which generates a very good return for us). Now, should our site be penalized because it's not education or college related?
All five of my sites jumped up to PR6/7 from PR4/5 yet no changes in the SERP. Any idea if the PR change will effect the SERP in the next 24 hours? I thought SERP altered way before you actually noticed the PR. Any feedback?
I noticed a jump in our serps (by about 100 places) roughly 10 days ago. They've been hovering around those palces since, so I think the actual (non-visible) recalc was done sometime around then.
let me go buy a few links to my competitor's sites so I can get them penalizedHe didn't get nuked because those pages were linking to him. It was simply the side effect of all his links being downgraded. When you are pulling all your PR & anchor text from obviously bought links, you go down when they do. Especially, when you're talking about 2,000 links from the same domain.
Back on topic.. I'm seeing a 300% increase in the number of internal backlinks reported. Other than that, more or less business as usual.
These are manual (human) nukes, not automated.
Automating in this way would simply not be possible for the reasons you have correctly outlined. Other sites linking to the "nuked" site have been auto-nuked due to the old "bad neighbourhood" rule.
Ramifications have had a dramatic effect on the SERPS overall for some very highly competitive terms due to the follow-through effect of loss of inbounds to the companies buying the links.
They got buried (the buyers) due to their purchased links becoming worthless, the sites selling got a manual nuke and sites linking to the manually nuked site got auto-nuked.
Hope that makes sense.
