A week ago (approximately 1mth after the site was finished) I found the site to be ranking really well on Google web and UK as was the related site of a friend whom I had helped and traded reciprocal links with.
I was running regular ranking reports in addweb, and suddenly noticed that 2 days later I was wiped out. I now do not rank at all and appear to have been cleaned out of google. Interestingly, so has my friend who was submitted on the same day, and who I linked to.
I have not used any hidden text, my meta tags are all right, my index page is rich in text and keywords, I have followed lots of general tips on this site, so I don't get why I might have been wiped out. The only thing I can think of is that my HTML doesnt validate perfectly, but I didn't think this would effect it...
Can anyone suggest what I have done, or what I can do to fix the problem? I have emailed google a few days ago, but got no response.
Many thanks for any assistance..
Welcome to WebmasterWorld!
I've used AddWeb for years and didn't have any problems, although I hated their reports design so I stopped. (they're virtually unprintable for clients). I have not personally seen any problems with being banned on any sites from Google as a result, but apparently Marcia (and I have heard rumors of others) that have.
As I recall, AddWeb usually defaults to 50 results. Google has not been overly generous to new sites - regardless of the number of quality backlinks.
First, I would make sure you are completely out of the index before you get too worried.
Go to your website first, then load Google/100 and your primary keyword:
[google.com...]
As far as "HTML doesnt validate perfectly," there is so much garbage out there that rates highly in the SERPS, I seriously doubt that is your problem either.
If it is completely gone after previously being in the index, its time to worry. If it has lost several pages in the SERPS, I would just be patient. Some of my newer sites within the past 2 months go from page 1 - to page 12 from day to day. Its discouraging, but Google is in the process of playing with its algo, and apparently doesn't know what to do with new sites yet.
And BTW, I recommend that you don't make a habit of sending your site out to "600,000 odd search engines!" There's only a handful that will do you any good, and I hope you didn't use your primary email for the return address.....
Sites have been added and then completely disappearing for a bit. Not to worry, just go on as normal. That is NOT the same thing as getting caught using automated tools.
I dont appear anywhere on [google.com...] or using www-fi.google.com anymore. Looks I have been completely cleared out.
It's just weird that so has my friend. Whose site was completed, submitted and got spidered and indexed at about the same time. He did use hidden text until I told him to remove it... but now his site is clean...
I have only run the ranking tool about 5 times. Would this be enough to piss them off?
I'm a little concerned. Is it possible to be penalised so quickly?
There is a unique keyword that nobody else has. Five pages on our site came up in SERPS for that keyword a month ago. Then Google said zero results for that keyword. It's been coming and going now for a few weeks. When it's there we get good traffic.
Googlebot does visit us daily. We have 4 inward links from PR5-6 pages and that's it. No FFAs, no spam, no addweb or other automated program, not even an ODP submission, nothing.
But the problem doesn't relate to just that keyword. One day a Google search will show that they have 30 pages of our site indexed. The next day it shows just two.
Marcia, how long is normal for this game of hide and seek? Any idea?

Marcia is absolutely right - quite normal and don't worry about it. You got the bonus of a fresh listing without actually being in the index proper. Consider it a lucky bonus.
It can carry on for a while - the best way to speed up getting in googles index is to get as many inbound links as possible, from quality on topic websites.
Expect it to be intermittent for up to 2-3 months, that way you can't be dissappointed.

In Friday it got spidered and appeared in SERPs
On Monday it no longer appeared in SERPs.
Where did it go?
I have links to it from other pages too.
(400 people visited my blog in the last week. It's the most successful web page I ever put up. I wish I could get people to visit the site that's suppose to make me money.)
On Monday I used AddWeb to submit to the same 600,000 directories (?) I'm sure you did.
I'll sticky you my url and possibly you can do the same. It would be a great chance to compare the AdWeb results, if any :)
Is it good practice to name files and folders using two word key phrases ie: www.website.com/keyword-keyword-images etc. or www.website.com/keyword-keyword-pages/keyword.html?
That makes me feel a great deal better.
Is it generally the case that use of automated programs like AddWeb and Search Engine Commando are a bad idea? They do seem to take a great deal of the effort out of things, but I have noticed that the AddWeb ranking module is highly innaccurate...
Conclusion: you'd have to wait for a couple of months to see your PR, but it won't affect your position in the SERPs.
Hopefully the rolling updates will reduce or eliminate a 3 month solidifying process.
Maybe interesting [webmasterworld.com]?
In about 3-6 months, you'll see your site becoming a lot more stable in the SERPs.
The sites outlined in that message are stable and doing real well.
