UK Vs US Based Server

About to move from UK to US Server

How will this affect my positions in the SERP? Will our site still be included in the google.co.uk index if we are on a server in the States. At the moment, we are in the UK on an (obviously) UK IP Block and always thought that this is how google determined which country specific indexes a site is in.

So will the site be removed from google.co.uk if we move to the US Server?

Yes, only if you are using a .uk domain. If it's a .com with a UK audience then you probably want it on a UK IP.

This is a harder question to answer. For some UK related (eg. travel related) searches, you may find that domains on non-UK IPs are lower in the SERPs when your Google interface language is English. Last time I checked, this was regardless of content, ODP category and domain extension.

Is there a good reasons to move it? If you are happy with the SERPS and you are targeting the UK then why not stay where you are?

Hi Leef50,

Did the same thing about 18 months ago due to costs (I saved £200 a month on a hi spec dedicated with big bandwidth)

Can fully agree with CIML - provided you are using a .co.uk domain - you have no worries.

I found no difference with serps whatsoever.

So all in all - IMO you should be fine - however make sure all the hassle if changing dns servers etc is worth it.

Leef50,

Do you own the .uk?

You could consider setting up the .co.uk on the server in the states with slightly different content and then transfer over the pages and content as the serps pick up on the new site. Then the .net could have a server side redirect to the .uk (as you are presumably targetting UK users I have found a .uk domain does help with the slightly slower members of the public trusting and using the site! ;) )

At the moment google is taking 3 days to list a new site and about 10 days to start picking up the pages within (3 of my new sites have been like this ove rhte past 2 weeks or so).

Just a thought?
