Hi all

Forgive me if this has already been covered, but I'm wondering how Google indexes images and whether there are any guidelines we should follow? I have a site to do which sells images so we need to find a way of getting them indexed properly. I'm sure it's to do with directory structures and naming but some firm clarification would be great.

Cheers

Hi charon,

Google indexes images with a bot called Googlebot-Image. If you haven't banned this bot in your robots.txt file then it will come and index your images.

To have them come up for appropriate search terms in the Google image search, you need to set the alt text of each image to describe it appropriately. So if it's a picture of the Pope then set the alt text as "the Pope" and the image will be optimised for ranking in Google's image search for that term.

Hope that helps.
