Just reviewed my logs and, late this morning, had an unexpected visitor that I've never seen before i.e. 216.239.39.5 HTTP/1.0 UP.Browser/6.1.0.1.140+(Google+CHTML+Proxy/1.0). Each of four pages was visited twice in succession. It doesn't appear to be freshbot or deepbot but does anyone know what it is?

I think Google operate a WAP proxy for searching using mobile devices - and that looks like a prime candidate for being exactly that.

Take a look at this thread [webmasterworld.com]

Ah yes, that looks very likely. Site isn't ideal for WAP/ mobiles but it's a free world. Thanks Netizen

The wapbot from the other thread had another UA string and other IPs:

UP.Browser/3.1.02-MC01 UP.Link/4.3.3.4 (Google WAP Proxy/1.0)
216.239.35.4
216.239.37.5

This is something else i think. Of course i might be wrong.

Well, actually, it's the i-mode proxy. See this thread [webmasterworld.com]
