Howdy Guys,

I was just wondering if it was bad if hundreds of sites in a link farm link to your site. This is the case with my website, they are linking to me without permission and they appear to be all on the same server. Or is it just bad if you link back to them, which I don't!

Thanks for your help!

Hi GoldenRanker

As far as I'm aware, Google will not penalize a site for any links pointing to it. This becuase you have no control over who links to you. You do however have control over who you link to and some sites (link farms) will no doubt cause a penalty.

We have link farmers and link directories link to us all of the time and we write them back letting them know we are not interested. Never effected our PR6 site in the least bit. Also "G" dosnt even look at most of these link farm pages anymore anyways - but even the very few that they do index never hurt any of our sites or the 100+ that we maintain.

If linking to a site from a link farm COULD hurt the site at the other end, viscious webmasters would just setup linkfarms to get their competition banned.

Good luck!

jady, what GoldenRanker refers to are links, not requests for recip linking.

There are linkfarmers who simply grab a few titles and links from sites that rank well in SEs and put them on the bottom of their dorway pages.

Probably they hope to increase the on-page relevancy and to mask the true linking pattern of the farm (these automated links are usually in the very bottom of page, marginally visible for human visitors).

Again, webmasters around the world would be killed if G penalized for this..

This question is asked every few weeks.

If they're linking to you than it's a good thing because you have the additional links.

I would ignore it. Just don't link back.

Only in the most extreme cases of incompetance would Google penalize your site over someone linking to you.

Or if it was discovered that you own the other sites doing the linking.

One more question. Someone is spamming my URL to guestbooks, will I be penalized? I have alot of malicious activity going on!

What if the link farms are appropriate to your industry? is there an issue with that?

According to a lot of people here that tactic still seems to work. I wouldn't recommend it, but feel free to spam your URL to guestbooks if that's what you're planning on doing.

I always say if you're going to use borderline or out-right "illegal" SEO tactics, don't do it with an important domain.

Some people have went WAY over-board because of a few comments by GoogleGuy where he says to be careful about linking to bad neighborhoods.

I would never link to a link farm, but I highly doubt everyone linking to them are being penalized.

Link to whoever you wish.

Linking to one bad site is fine(And if it has a good PR than most likely Google doesn't consider it a bad site). You'll only get in trouble if you're linking to plenty of bad sites and it appears that you're "in on the scam."

Otherwise you're fine.

We have a few sites. Some we keep link farm free and others we get reciprocal links from other travel sites. It works! So some link pages have PR0 but others do not. The sheer number of links from these sites can make you #1.

If you get 500 + links from link pages you will rock. Have done it with a few sites already.
