Thanks for the post Brett, gives some usefull insights into google news relevancy factor.
Especially this part of the google news intrigued me alot.

"As with Google's web ranking, relevance is determined by information retrieval techniques that look at the distribution of words in the article and surrounding pages on the web. If the article matches the query well it is deemed relevant and gets a high score. Other factors include the importance of the source, timeliness of the article, and importance of the news story, relative to other stories in the news currently."

This in short reveals alot if looked at in deep.

I read that couple of weeks ago when it was mentioned in the Googlefriends newsletter.

Krishna is one of the Top technical resources in the plex...He is also the guy behind Google's recent patent about local pagerank .

Here is a collection of all his research publications ...

Looks like soon newspapers will start hiring SEOs as reporters to write articles for them.

IMO, Google news is a really well done set-up.

Google news' algo was also briefly discussed in the supporters forum: ;)

So now it gets down to defining surrounding pages on the web..

My tuppence: Krishna Bharat is Googleguy!

Googleguy is pally (more or less) with Brett, Brett introduces us to Krishna now, Googleguy has mentioned cricket a few more times than he has mentioned other games, same goes for India, Krishna is Indian!

How's my reasoning?

Gogleguy, if I am right you can stickymail me, I wont tell anyone you did!

LOL

Just because Krishna Bharat is an Indian and GoogleGuy mentions cricket therefore both are same.

I am an Indian too and GoogleGuy has helped me out on many occasions :) but I still think its not him....

My tuppence: Krishna Bharat is Googleguy!

Not a chance. Been analyzing this for sometime :) He is not an Indian. I agree here with shaadi. (Haven't seen his references to Cricket though)

and surrounding pages on the web

What could that be! Are we talking about themes now?

To the best of my knowledge, Indians rarely say Oy! and Ya'll in the same post:)

Good observation, powdork. But googleguy is an indian working with google in US. So he can say Y'all and Ay, Yo et al! My pals there do!

But an Indian who doesn't know when Indian Republic Day is (though he's "glad to know about that one!")?

Or was he spoofing us to put us off the scent!?

right. also, taking my pop psychology further, brett has fallen for anold temptation. which is, if ur first attempt at pulling off something good works, people tend to try it again though repeating it may be inviting notice. i think thats the reason. pushing it a little further for extra thrills! :)
