Category I'm keeping my beady eye on is full of Japanese results, on page two I got this message.
Has G gone multilingual in the main DB?

The main DB has always been multilingual I think. You can restrict the results to English by selecting English as the language in the advanced search, or by appending &lr=lang_en to the normal search.

yes, the index has always been multiligual - i've been seeing that "would you prefer to..." message for some time - months at the very least.

seems to be where search results are mostly not in english.

OK, I think I see, if a word (in English) happens to have more results in another language that message comes up, </added>
