Does Google index, or alternatively, penalise code comments?

I may be wrong but I don't think they take a blind bit of notice because they are meant to be annotations in relation to the code. If however you abuse the purpose and add spam it may be a different story.

Err on the side of caution if you are thinking about adding covert promotional aids!

It would be interesting to create a page with comments containing unique keywords for which G currently has no SERPS (ie make something up like "gobbledygookgookgook") and once G has indexed it do a search for it and see what happens.

Good idea but ensure it looks like an internal comment.

Thanks a lot. Just read elsewhere that if Google noticed comment tags it would also read JavaScript - don't think the spider would be programmed to tell the difference.
