First off I've been reading and trying to keep up with everything on this website since December from last year. And I greatly appreciate all the information supplied by all the users I thinks it's absolutely amazing.
Little bit of a back story - I took over 8 websites that were absolutely HORRID - no meta content, all image index's with no content, no keyword relavancy, and just plain crappy sites... I've redesigned some of them but still the content on the sites is horrible and though relevant it isn't keyword heavy (among with the other 20 other issues). So I've been trying to get him to hire a good copywriter for the last to months. Anyway he's convinced that having sites on the same IP is what the problem is (and the ONLY problem at that) and thats why we rank so low.
The other hilarious thing is the one site I REALLY dug into and worked on for 3 weeks gained almost 30% visibility in just a couple weeks (which I was absolutely thrilled about).
Anyway, the point is, is there ANYTHING I could show him to PROVE to him that IT DOESN'T MATTER?! The content (even though weak) is different. Anyway thanks for any responses.

Way too many people make causality links with SE rankings that just have no bearing whatsoever. The number of people an WebmasterWorld who actually do enough research with scientific controls to evaluate the algorithm with some degree of certainty is very low.
And these experienced people who will tell you that what they are seeing is just the best they can do from observation, not really knowing every factor. Chances are the IP the only possible factor he knows of, so that's what he blames. It's like my girlfriend saying that the car wont start because the red flashy light on the dash must have shorted or something.... its just that she knows nothing else. he seems like the type who willw ait a week, then tell you that he discovered something about the net, and proceed to tell you what you told him :)
That said, if your CEO has so much free time that he can be a crack SEO specialist inbetween running the company, the company has problems. You are clearly the expert here... too bad he has the power.
yesterday I had a 25% increase in hits out of nowhere. My best friends car also melted to the ground in a car fire.
Coincidence? No causal link? I think not.
You must burn the CEO's car for best results.
EDIT: did you notice what he said?
"Actually this doc does nothing to support my evidence of webcrawlers and bots."
Yep, it actually contradicts everything you know... yet that doesn't phase you at all! How much evidence does he need before he realizes there might be something to it.
I'm going to take some of the advice... mainly the part of finding new employment. Besides the fact of being grossly underpaid for all my duties I perform here. The company is on a dead-end road. They dump (and I'm not exaggerating here) close to 35k a month on overture.
No joke. I know I'm the one that took over the responsibility for it, and while I'm sure it brings in some profits I can't justify it. Off the top of my head in the last 2-3 weeks I can remember 1 - 6k deposit, 2 - 2k deposits, and 2 - 1k deposits.
The thing that freaks me out is they will dump all this money in overture, but won't dump 1 or 2k into hiring a copywriter. Does that make sense?
Oh well, I have a really cool independent project I'm working on that I'm going to be testing alot of the new theories you guys have posted. Please keep up the good work.
Update as I am typing this our Operations Manger just came up to me, saying that the CEO, and I quote : "has the President of Google, from the Stanford conference he attended last night, saying websites on there own IP's make ALL the difference in the world." I don't believe it and I want to see it. lol.

I have purchased some materials direct from GOOGLE and Stanford
I am pretty knowledgable about google - and the only thing I could imagine him buying is this:
[googlestore.com...]
What "materials" is he talking about? Well we all know he is just blowing smoke.
Same with the "I disagree and our poor rankings reflects that." comment.
This could be said about almost any theory out there.
We don't pay for adwords - and are ranked poor - therefore not paying google causes poor rankings.
We don't use invisible text - and are ranked poor - therefore using invisible text is helpful.
It is a good thing you are leaving. People like that will only drive you nuts....
I took over 8 websites that were absolutely HORRID - no meta content, all image index's with no content, no keyword relavancy, and just plain crappy sites.
Why are there eight (08) sites? Are they very similar in nature? Are there eight (08) sites because someone felt it would be appropriate to get 8 different domains and increase exposure?
If these eight (08) sites are similar and are being used just for the purpose of increasing your exposure online, then sharing the same IP may be a problem.
If these eight (08) sites are unique then a shared IP should not represent any problems. Due to the shortage of IP numbers, shared IP hosting has become common place.
Perhaps your sites were penalized for some other reason that took place before you took over. If you have been working and unable to improve any at all in the past 6 months then something is very wrong.
Secondly 3 of the sites are similar in genre - automotive warranty business. But all the sites have completely different names with completely different content. They're not similar and are not being used just for the purpose of increasing your exposure online.
The other five are different - 1 being a prepaid legal site, 1 being for credit unions, another being for cue sticks... ect ect.
Well as for penalized in the past that could very well have happened... I like to think of myself as a pretty good web design and pretty decent SE optimizer... there should have been alot more improvement than what i'm seeing...
But changing your IP address can be a dangerous thing. Google does not update their DNS cache very often. There have been cases reported here where it has taken them up to 3 months. Do a site search on [googlebot dns] and you will see what I mean.
Just ask him to leave that site that you have gotten the improved traffic on the same machine and IP it is currently on. Keep plugging away on that one and when (if) all the other sites disappear from the index next month, your site might just be the one to keep the company afloat.
