Is creating a new site a good way of getting links for my main site?

I've got 1000 pages that each target a specific product. My 10 competitors sells the same 1000 products and also have a page for each product. We all have similar product pages with the product name in the title, meta description, meta keywords, <h1>, <h2>, <b> and <i> tags - and a lot of describing content (also the same). None of us have any links to our product pages. Our homepages have different PR.

I guess that one way to top the listings in the search result is to get more links to the specific product pages. But I think It's really hard to get these links. So, I'm thinking of starting 10 other sites; copies, but with a slightly different design. Every new site should have a product page that also have a link to my main site's product page. This would lead to more links to my main site....

Will it work? Is this good or bad?

They could be seen as portal / micro sites which is not really the best way to go about helping yourself because if the content is similar and the design similar you are in the realms of getting a duplicate content penalty.

I would suggest that you think about swapping links and getting the links back to goto specific product pages. Perhaps you could have one link per page where you advertise another site and they reciprocate from somewhere on their site. Although it doesnt seem l link is going to help if you think about the fact that in the end you are going to have 1000 extra links into your site I'm sure you can appreciate the benefit.

Only other thing I would suggest is directory submissions to specific pages (if you can) or perhaps some affiliate programs to specific pages.
