I've heard the inbound links from .edu domain names are weigh heavier on your PR. Is this because .edu sites tend to have more content or do you think there is actually a bias towards .edu, I've also heard (i think from searchenginewatch.com) that .net is the worst. I have been on a campaign to get .edu sites (universities mainly) to link to my site and so far I have a great deal of them, but my PR hasnt change as of yet, still 6. Another reason I seem to think .edu sites are better is because they usually don't care about reciprocal links, I get inbound links but they don't ask for my link back. My site is relavent to Universities so I guess it works well for me, but if you have a career site or something I would recomend targeting those .edu domains even tho I havnt seen any proof of its effectivness yet.

From what a google rep said they dont' treat the TLD's different, often .edu have a very high PageRank, due to the amount of inbound links they have, imagine 1 out of a 100 students that graduate links back to the site, you will have quite a high number of inbound links ;) also most .edu have very good content on them.
And please focus more on the traffic you might be getting from the inbound links than the Toolbar rank, it's traffic that counts, not the green bar.

The PageRank of a page is independent of the traffic. Google doesn't order its results caring the traffic that each page has, the order is based on the PageRank, which is based on the links pointing to the page.
Even so, the final goal of SEO is to get well ranked to get more traffic from the search engines. So search for your keywords in SE to look if its ranking has improved, and look at your traffic to check up if your work is good.
And remember that the Toolbar does not show your real PageRank: it's only an aproximation!
So get traffic and don't worry :)

Back to the topic: i don't think google does any explicit classification of sites by the domain. It's simply that .edu sites tend to have less and better links that .com or .net, so their links weight more. Probably google likes that .edu links get more weight, but they let it to happen naturally. They won't make something that can be made by itself! :o
