I have a site that has a PR6, the Google toolbar shows backlinks, yet the site is not in the index (a search for www.mydomain.com & [mydomain.com...] brings up "Sorry, no information is available for the URL ...").

Any ideas/

Thanks!

I have a site that was in the index for several months, but without PR. That site now has noindex, follow on every page as it now directs to a new replacement site, with more content. Google has just stopped listing the old site, and has started including the new site. This change started happening in the last update, just two weeks ago. The old site has only just started showing PR, even though it is no longer in the index. The new site still does not show PR.

Maybe your site has a duplicate content penalty, and isn't in the index. Maybe the domain listed in the index is without the www prefix. This needs a more deep inspection.

I have the same thing going on with a bunch of my site, they have pr4-5 but, there not in the index and its been like that for months now. I want to just put the sites on new domain names but, i am scard that they will be seen as dup. content and get banned (even tho the other site will be gone. This is a topic that hasn't been looked but, is a very big deal.

If a competitor copies my content, can that penalize me? I have found a site that stole some content and have had difficulties getting them to take down the content.

It does have the www prefix.

Yes, if someone steals your content, you can appear to G as a duplicate site. Try searching using '&filter=0'. Add this to the results page url in your browsers address bar and G wont filter dup sites.

I dont know if this works when searching for your domain name as i would think that you would show for that term, but its worth a try.

It could also be a broken Toolbar. This has been happening quite a bit.

Let me rephrase that, as I think you misunderstood my meaning:

Maybe Google has actually listed domain.com rather than www.domain.com in the index?

Check for that as well.

However, it sounds more like a duplicate site problem.

If a site was out of the index for dup. contain then the other site would show up when you searched for the backlinks or contain the term. Also, the "other" url would show up as the url for the backlinks if you did a search on google for www.domainname.com...

Just last month I was on your same situation.

Contacted Google following GGuy advise here on this forums and was told by them that my site was banned (nothing to do with duplicate content on my case)

Your simptoms are just the same so this could be the answer.
Hope I am wrong

Another possiblitity is that it was penalised because of the expired domain fiasco and google have resurrected its pr but still wont list it.I had half a dozen sites that had dmoz and google listings but were dropped because they linked and had links from expired domains a few months ago.
They turned back up on the dominic index with less pr but now in Esmeralda they have all disappeared again though they retain their PR.Weird

Ah! That's what happened!

So a competitor can simply rip off your content and bump both sites out of the index? That's kind of like hip-checking!

Why wouldn't someone just set up "dummy" sites that are exact duplicates of their competitors' content to knock them out of the index?

(Unless I have misinterpreted all this info, I think this is the case)
