THE WIRED 40 July 2003 edition
[wired.com...]

Much has changed since 1998, when we launched our list of the 40 most wired companies. The tech boom and bust unleashed a wave of creative destruction that proved far more tempestuous than anyone had imagined.

Our list, too, has seen its share of turmoil. Only 10 of the original 40 companies remain.

Thanks, Fathom.

Interestingly, G is #1, yet in their description, not a single occurance of the words *marketing* or *advertising*.

Analysts estimate Google will pull in revenue of $600 million in 2003. The site has launched shopping and news pages in the past 12 months...With footholds in ecommerce and the DIY publishing boom, Google is set to become even more indispensable than it already is.
Yea, ok, and thats where the 600 MM is coming from.

Next year, it will still be #1. The description will read a little different though;)

The problem with being #1 though > scrutiny. Everyone wants your place! ;)

I was fascinated by only 10 remain of the original 40 that's 1:4 odds on not being there in five years.

What strikes me is that the old finnish rubber boot factory Nokia is #2! Talk about rebranding! It really is the same company, we still have several pairs of Nokia rubber boots in our family!
