Do older pages have higher PR?

I had a series of pages with similar content and equal PR. One of the file names was misspelled. So I deleted the original file and moved all the content to a new file. No changes in the content. Now all of the pages have equal PR with this one exception which has a slightly lower PR. This is proof enough for me that older pages have higher PR.

I doubt that older pages have higher PR.

Even if Google would give older pages a benefit and would rank them higher (I don't believe in this theory), they wouldn't change PR. They would add an age factor in the ranking algorithm and not mix two separate (independent) factors.

There are other explanations for your observation:
- Google have not yet indexed all backlinks (i.e. after the next update all pages should get same PR)
- inaccuracies in the numerical PR calculation
- additional (unknown, external) backlinks

Have you checked the backlinks for those pages?

Seems straight forward - as PR is determined in part by incoming links; if you've changed the filename of a page it would lose any benefit of inbound links to its previous name...

Have you checked the backlinks for those pages?

Yes. Most of the pages have no external backlinks. The backlinks are from other pages on the site. The pages are all very similar and linked equally across the site.

SlowMove,

when did you made these changes? It can take some time until you see the correct PR.

If I understand you correctly, you are saying that the 'new' page is already showing all (!) backlinks?

(If you made these changes only a few weeks ago and Google has indexed the backlinks only partly, it would be clear that PR is lower than those of the other pages.)

Yes. From my site. Admittedly, it is possible that there are other off-site backlinks that aren't showing.

Newbie here ... not sure if this is the right place but Google's PR is pretty strange. I ran across a site:

<html>
<head>
<title>. (dot)</title>
<style>
body{
margin: 0px;
padding: 0px;
cursor: default;
background-image: url(/dot.gif);
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<!-- everything is ephemeral -->
</body>
</html>

Had a PR6

That was 2-3 weeks ago. I emailed Google about it. Still has PR6.

old_expat,

welcome to webmasterworld!

PR is some kind of importance, but it doesn't say anything about the content. If that page has numerous important incoming links, then the page is also important (i.e. having high PR). Even if there is no content at all.

Hello doc_z ... thanks for the welcome.

"If that page has numerous important incoming links, then the page is also important (i.e. having high PR). Even if there is no content at all."

I hear what you are saying, but ... how can a page with nothing have importance unless we are talking about something other than the real world. To use a much worn cliche, isn't that sort of like the tail wagging the dog?

And what possible motivation, other than "ratings", would someone have for linking to a site with no content?

Actually, when I found the site I think I was searching for news feeds on a specific topic and totally unrelated to the domain name. It was on page 1, something like #6.

After reading your response I checked back links and there are more than 400.

Many of thos links, however, come from other pages on the domain which are identically empty.

I have always heard that "content is king" ...

So if links alone is what Google is using for PR and placement in the top 10, why include any content at all on the pages, just a few ad banners and tons of links?

Sorry, not meaning to rant, just from a guy who was #14 and #16 for keyword phrases with a site that is non commercial, has no spam, no hidden links, no hidden text, more than 200 pages of real content and got dumped back to page 12 on one set of kw and disappeared with the other set.

Older or Newer pages have no bearing on PR in case of Google. Google ranks the pages on the basis of incoming links. Greater the incomeing links hinger is the rank.

There is a very simple way to get on Google with good rankings. Google ranks you site on the basis of number of sites actually linking back to your site. If the number of sites linking back to your is greater your ranking will be higher. Then how is it simple to get on Google with good rankings you may ask? To give an example - this page is already indexed by google, which i found out by doing a simple search. So i know Google is going to update this page in its database using its world famous GoogleBot Spider in about months time. Now to achieve a greater ranking for my site I will just add a link here www.accu-swift.com [accu-swift.com]. So if you want a higher ranking at Google just find as many user forums as possible and add your link. It may take about 2-3 days to add your links to 400-500 different user forums. But it will assure you a number one position in Google. And please remember be patient with Google it will eventually add your site in its index if the GoogleBot finds links to your site on the internet.

Perhaps there was content some time ago?

Many of thos links, however, come from other pages on the domain which are identically empty.

If those pages are empty, they couldn't link to the other page. Either the content of those pages was changed (and Google haven't updated the backlinks) or they are cloaking. I would have a look at the page cache (and wait until the next update when Google updates the backlinks and PR).

I have always heard that "content is king" ...

That's true. If you have good content you will get incoming links, which will improve your ranking. However, this is a longsome process.

So if links alone is what Google is using for PR and placement in the top 10, why include any content at all on the pages, just a few ad banners and tons of links?

Incoming links are the important point for PR, but PR is just one factor for the ranking algorithm. There are other important points, e.g. anchor text, title and content. If you improve the other things, you can easily outrank a higher PR page. Also, (as already mentioned) if you have good and unique conten,t you will get backlinks which will improve your PR and ranking.

wait until nileshkurhade learns the meaning of anchor text.

:)

oh, and way to spam google from inside the Google News forum.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
/me pulls out the text book, and in his best 'san francisco accent' says; "People, there are lessons to be learned here...who's taking notes? Let's say it together; "anchor text is good...spamming google is baaaadd""
