To whomever can answer this!:

I have added this peice of code to my hosts file:
216.239.41.104 toolbarqueries.google.com

I was told that this would allow me to view my "new" PR for this update before it goes live to other servers.

I then saved my hosts file, but do not see a difference. Some of you may be thinking that maybe my PR didn't change. But, I have a brand new site that wasn't showing backlinks last month, thus I had a PR0. In -fi, however, I show over 100 backlinks and was told I should now have PR. However, when I loaded up my site with that new toolbar code in my host file, I still show PR0? Anyone know why? I heard reference to flushing your DNS cache...how does one do this? Thanks for your answers :)

If you're using windows 2k/xp:

go to

start > run > type: cmd

Then, at the command prompt type:

ipconfig /flushdns

That'll do it.

If you're using anything else...reboot. :)

On 2000/NT

Start run "cmd.exe"
ipconfig/flushdns

same here - changed the hosts file, flushed the dns, no change in pr. same situation - new site, had pr0, got good backlinks that are showing up in -fi, but still showing pr0.

Same situation for me using winme... added the line to hosts, rebooted, still showing PR0 on the newly listed pages in -fi. Guess I'll just have to be patient to see if I got my PR7 on the main page.

Add "..... for my site" to that.

We see our new PR on -fi.

Your mileage will vary.

PR changes immediately after I change my hosts file (xp) without flushing or even closing my browser.

If you see no changes, it usually means your PR is unchanged.

Perhaps the dns cache isn't actually being flushed. Does anyone know of a way to do this with 98/WinMe other than a reboot (that might not be doing it on my machine)?

Stefan, it's not a DNS cache problem - the hosts file comes before the cache and -fi is a static IP addy.

I see the change.
Win 98
File - windows/hosts

Just need to launch a new browser window after editing the hosts file. No reboot needed.

We also see new PR on our sites. Maybe its to early to say , but it seems like they have tighten up the PR....
Same backlinks + a few more but PR dropped to 5 on one of our sites...

On 2000/XP, cache is definitely consulted before HOSTS.

Not sure on 9x/ME.

Maybe my new pages have PR0, but they're linked from PR5 and PR6 pages on my site, are #1 for the kw's in -fi...

I'm inclined to think it's just not working on my computer for some reason. Back to being patient.

I am showing Yahoo as a nine when I call the www-fi from the toolbar. I see alot of sites with one pr rank lower. This leads me to believe that I am missing something or that this isnt the final Pr for this update. Any thoughts?

Can somebody provide COMPLETE information on the following:

Is the addition of "216.239.41.104 toolbarqueries.google.com" a permanent requirement to make Google toolbar work?

Why is the standard Google toolbar not working?

Isn't it kinda bad practice for Google to supply the Toolbar and it not work properly?

Are there other entries that need to be made in the hosts file to keep the Google Toolbar functioning properly?

More total pages indexed = lower average PR

No...its a temporary requirement to see new PR values resulting from the update.

Isn't it kinda bad practice for Google to supply the Toolbar and it not work properly?

Isn't it bad practice to make uninformed accusations? ;)

The technique is meant to force the toolbar PR to show the new updated, but not on www, value. Be patient; the toolbar will show the final PR after the update is complete.

jbgilbert,
By adding that entry into your host file what you are effectivly doing is tricking the toolbar into showing you the future published page rank of your site. The google toolbar will always display your pagerank currently. The toolbar will query toolbar.google.com What you are in effect doing is telling your computer to make sure that all traffic pointed to that address will be redirected to the specified ip address. What I usualy do in my host file is add a # to the start then when I need to see the "future" I remove it. When PR starts to calm dowm I put the # back again. This tells your host file to ignore the added address.

Mack.
