IP address issues

Sharing many sites with 1 physical IP address

Does anyone have any information on the effect on search engines when you change the IP address on your sites. I have a dedicated server that hosts many of my sites on many different IP addresses. I now have the option to upgrade to a new dedicated server with my own DNS server. This new system will run all of my sites on one Physical IP address, and will allow me to create an unlimited number of virtual IP addresses. I'm wondering how this will affect my search engine ranking, of course most specifically Google. I'm obviously not very technically minded when it comes to web servers and hosting and in the past have got some great information from this forum.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the great Info. and your time. I tried to find it on my own before posting, honest. One of the main bones of contention he is whether Google is using IP address at all, or are they only cataloging Domain Names. It would be great to get some info from Google Guy as to whether google will ban or penalize the one physical IP address or the offending sites virtual address(or Domain Name)on the server.

Thanks again

Another quicky, do you have any idea on whether changing these IP addresses will have any affect on positions in search results. Effects such as aged factors in the search indexes.

Hi,
I've read reports here of perhaps a little stall on occasion, but Google seems to sort it all out in the end.

However, considering the current scenario, I would postpone any major changes. Furthermore, since it appears you're already there, keep your money-makers on a physical IP--cheap insurance.

added: most of my domains are virtual domains and I haven't had a single, negative, SE-related issue.

analogy: I live in a mountain community; typically 4 houses share a well to obtain H2O; the smart ones have their own well; if their well runs-dry, they can't blame a neighbor for overwatering the lawn--they know it has to be their own fault and it's not a court battle to get the H2O flowing again. IMO, it's worth a little more cash to know I can always flush my toilets.
